Bamboo is often called “climate positive” or “CO₂-neutral.” But what is really true about that? In this article, we look at the life cycle analysis of bamboo toilet paper versus standard wood fiber toilet paper — with sober figures and sources.
The raw material: bamboo versus tree
Bamboo grows 30-50x faster than conifers used for toilet paper. Concrete numbers (source: WUR & FSC studies):

Production process
The defibering, drying, and processing of bamboo uses similar energy as wood fiber. The advantage lies in:
- No deinking needed (for recycled fiber it is needed)
- Less bleaching agents — especially with unbleached bamboo toilet paper none at all
- Less chemical residues heading towards water treatment
Transport: the fair check
Bamboo comes from Asia (mainly China). Wood fiber from Europe or North America. Is sea freight transport then not worse?
Surprising answer: almost the same.
- Sea freight per kg: ~0.01 kg CO₂/kg over 18,000 km
- Truck Europe per kg: ~0.08 kg CO₂/kg over 1,000 km
Per kg of finished product, sea freight from China in terms of transport is even somewhat more favorable than truck transport within Europe, because ships carry so many kilos at once.
Packaging makes a difference

Durability per roll
Bamboo rolls have on average 25-40% more sheets per roll. Specifically: 48 bamboo rolls ≈ 100 supermarket rolls. That means:
- Less transport per use

The total calculation per wipe

Not enormous, but accumulated over an entire neighborhood or city it does add up. And it is an automatic saving without you having to change anything about your behavior.

Honesty: it is not a miracle cure
Bamboo toilet paper is an incremental improvement, not a miracle cure. Your biggest impact is not in your toilet paper choice but in meat, flying, and housing. But if you do use toilet paper — which we all do — then bamboo is a simple, automatic choice with a tangibly better footprint than standard supermarket wood fiber.
